Advice for clinicians

Clinical guidance and real-world outcome data from Weight Loss Wales, Wales' first fully remote, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales-accredited obesity clinic.

About the clinic

Weight Loss Wales became the first Healthcare Inspectorate Wales accredited and approved virtual weight management clinic in Wales, utilising a fully digital approach to patient consultations. By integrating virtual assessments with close, ongoing patient engagement via WhatsApp, text messaging, and email, the service provides continuous support while optimising adherence to treatment.

  • Characterises the clinical circumstances, patient profiles, and weight outcomes associated with dose reduction or treatment discontinuation
  • Identifies predictors of successful de-escalation versus weight regain, informing evidence-based protocols for tapering
  • Supports the development of structured de-escalation pathways within remote and community obesity services

Seasonal Variation in Weight Management Outcomes: Evidence from a Remote Welsh Obesity Clinic

Davies A et al. Poster presentation, Obesity Week 2026, Washington DC, 13 November 2026. Weight Loss Wales.

Key findings

  • Novel analysis of seasonal patterns in weight loss, weight regain, and treatment engagement from a real-world remote obesity clinic dataset
  • Identifies clinically significant seasonal variation in patient outcomes, with implications for appointment scheduling and proactive clinical support
  • Findings support the case for seasonally-aware obesity management protocols, particularly around high-risk periods such as Christmas and summer holidays
  • Presented at Obesity Week 2026, the flagship annual conference of The Obesity Society and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

Innovative digital weight management: real-world outcomes from Weight Loss Wales

Key findings

  • 96% of patients remained on treatment for at least six months
  • Average weight loss at six months was 19 kg
  • Average dose of tirzepatide used was 7.7 mg, reflecting a gradual patient-centric titration approach

12-Month Real-World Outcomes From Wales' First Fully Accredited Remote Obesity Clinic

Davies, A.L. et al. (2025) '12-Month Real-World Outcomes From Wales' First Fully Accredited Remote Obesity Clinic', ObesityWeek 2025, Atlanta, GA, USA, 5 November. Poster presentation (Poster 264).

Key findings

  • 91% of patients remained on therapy at 12 months
  • Only 2% discontinued due to side effects — significantly lower than SURMOUNT-1 (6.2%) and STEP-1 (4.5%)
  • Average weight loss was 24.8 kg, sustained across the cohort
  • No A&E attendances or primary care consultations related to treatment were recorded
  • No prescriptions required for the management of side effects

MoA Education Reduces Side Effects and Enhances Persistence in Remote Obesity Treatment

Davies, A.L. et al. (2025) 'MoA Education Reduces Side Effects and Enhances Persistence in Remote Obesity Treatment', ObesityWeek 2025, Atlanta, GA, USA, 5 November. Poster presentation (Poster 265).

Key findings

  • Structured education on mechanism of action was associated with reduced discontinuation
  • Fewer side effects and no requirement for adjunctive prescribing
  • Remote care, when grounded in education and real-time support, can match or exceed traditional models in safety, tolerability, and persistence
