Hydration and Weight Loss: Does Drinking More Water Help?

Staying well hydrated is important for health — but can drinking more water actually help with weight loss? Here is what the evidence says, and what it does not.

You have probably heard that drinking more water can help with weight loss. The evidence is more nuanced than the headlines suggest — but there are genuine, well-supported reasons why staying well hydrated supports weight management.

Water and appetite

Drinking water before meals can reduce appetite and calorie intake. A randomised controlled trial published in the journal Obesity found that adults who drank 500 ml of water 30 minutes before each main meal lost significantly more weight over 12 weeks than those who did not. The effect is modest but consistent — and it is one of the simplest dietary changes you can make.

Thirst versus hunger

The brain regions that process hunger and thirst signals overlap, and mild dehydration can sometimes be misinterpreted as hunger. Staying well hydrated throughout the day may reduce the frequency of false hunger signals, particularly in the afternoon when dehydration is most common.

Replacing high-calorie drinks

One of the most significant ways water supports weight loss is by replacing high-calorie beverages. Sugary drinks, fruit juices, flavoured coffees, and alcohol can contribute hundreds of calories per day — often without registering as "food" in the way solid meals do. Replacing them with water is one of the simplest and most effective dietary changes you can make.

How much should you drink?

The NHS recommends around six to eight glasses (1.5–2 litres) of fluid per day, more in hot weather or when exercising. Plain water, herbal teas, and low-fat milk all count. Caffeinated drinks count too, though caffeine has a mild diuretic effect at high doses.
