Mindful Eating: What It Is and How to Do It

Mindful eating is not a diet — it is a way of relating to food that can help you eat less, enjoy food more, and break unhelpful eating patterns. Here is the evidence and how to start.

Mindful eating is the practice of paying full, non-judgmental attention to the experience of eating — the taste, texture, smell, and appearance of food, as well as your internal hunger and fullness signals. It draws on principles from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and has a growing evidence base in weight management.

Why does mindful eating help with weight?

Most overeating happens automatically — in front of screens, while distracted, or in response to emotions rather than physical hunger. Mindful eating interrupts these automatic patterns by bringing conscious awareness to the eating experience. This makes it easier to notice when you are genuinely hungry, to recognise fullness before you have overeaten, and to distinguish physical hunger from emotional hunger.

Practical mindful eating strategies

  • Eat without screens — put your phone away and turn off the television
  • Eat slowly — put your fork down between bites and chew thoroughly
  • Check in with your hunger before eating — are you physically hungry, or eating out of boredom, stress, or habit?
  • Notice the taste and texture of your food, particularly in the first few bites
  • Pause halfway through a meal to assess your fullness level on a scale of one to ten
  • Eat at a table, not on the sofa or at a desk

Does mindful eating work for weight loss?

Research suggests that mindful eating can reduce calorie intake, reduce binge eating episodes, and improve the overall relationship with food. It is most effective as part of a broader weight management approach that also addresses diet quality, physical activity, and any underlying emotional or psychological factors.
