Weight Loss and Blood Pressure: A Direct Connection

High blood pressure affects around a third of adults in the UK and is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Weight loss is one of the most effective ways to lower it.

High blood pressure (hypertension) affects around a third of adults in the UK and is a leading cause of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. It is often called the "silent killer" because it produces no symptoms until significant damage has already occurred. Excess weight is one of the most significant modifiable risk factors for hypertension.

How does excess weight raise blood pressure?

Excess weight increases blood pressure through several mechanisms. It increases the volume of blood the heart must pump, raises levels of hormones such as aldosterone and angiotensin that constrict blood vessels, promotes insulin resistance which impairs blood vessel function, and increases sympathetic nervous system activity. Visceral fat is particularly important — it is metabolically active and produces substances that directly raise blood pressure.

How much does weight loss lower blood pressure?

On average, losing one kilogram of body weight reduces systolic blood pressure by around 1 mmHg. Losing 10 kg could therefore reduce systolic blood pressure by around 10 mmHg — a clinically meaningful reduction that translates into a significantly lower risk of stroke and heart attack. For some people, weight loss is sufficient to bring blood pressure into the normal range without medication.

Other lifestyle measures that help
