Weight Loss and Sleep Apnoea: A Powerful Connection
Obstructive sleep apnoea affects millions of people in the UK and is strongly linked to excess weight. Weight loss can dramatically improve — and in some cases resolve — the condition.
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition in which the upper airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing breathing to stop and start. It affects an estimated 1.5 million people in the UK, though many remain undiagnosed. Excess weight is the single biggest modifiable risk factor for OSA — excess fat around the neck and throat narrows the airway and makes collapse more likely.
What are the symptoms of sleep apnoea?
- Loud, persistent snoring
- Waking with a choking or gasping sensation
- Excessive daytime sleepiness, even after a full night in bed
- Morning headaches
- Difficulty concentrating or poor memory
- Low mood or irritability
Many people with OSA are unaware they have it — a partner or family member may notice the symptoms first.
Why does sleep apnoea matter?
Untreated OSA causes repeated drops in blood oxygen overnight, placing significant strain on the cardiovascular system. It is associated with a substantially increased risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. It also disrupts sleep architecture, preventing restorative deep sleep and contributing to the hormonal changes that drive weight gain — creating a reinforcing cycle.
What does weight loss do?
Weight loss is one of the most effective treatments for OSA. Even a 10% reduction in body weight can produce a significant improvement in symptoms. In cases of substantial weight loss, complete resolution of OSA has been documented. A doctor-led weight management programme can address both conditions together.
