How to Set Realistic Weight Loss Goals — and Why It Matters
Setting the right goals is one of the most important — and most overlooked — parts of a weight loss journey. Unrealistic targets are one of the most common reasons people give up.
One of the most common reasons people struggle with weight loss is setting goals that are unrealistic. When those goals are not met — even when significant progress has been made — it can feel like failure. That feeling of failure is one of the most powerful predictors of giving up. Getting goal-setting right is therefore not a minor detail; it is central to long-term success.
What is a realistic rate of weight loss?
A safe and sustainable rate of weight loss is generally 0.5–1 kg per week. This may sound slow, but it adds up: 0.5 kg per week is 26 kg in a year. Faster weight loss is possible in the early stages of a programme, particularly with a structured approach, but rapid loss is harder to sustain and more likely to involve muscle loss rather than fat loss.
Focus on health outcomes, not just the scales
The number on the scales is one measure of progress, but it is not the only one — and it is not always the most meaningful. Other important markers include blood pressure, blood sugar, energy levels, sleep quality, mobility, joint pain, and mood. Many of these can improve significantly even before large amounts of weight are lost. Tracking these outcomes alongside weight gives a fuller and more motivating picture of progress.
Use SMART goals
SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Rather than "I want to lose weight," a SMART goal might be "I will walk for 30 minutes on five days per week for the next four weeks." Behavioural goals — things you can control directly — are often more useful than outcome goals like a target weight.
Be kind to yourself
Weight loss is rarely a straight line. There will be weeks when the scales do not move, or when life gets in the way. What matters is the overall trend over time, not perfection every day. A doctor-led programme provides the structure and support to help you set and achieve realistic goals — and to reframe setbacks as part of the process rather than evidence of failure.
