Hit a Weight Loss Plateau? Here Is Why It Happens and What to Do

Almost everyone experiences a weight loss plateau at some point. Understanding the biology behind it can help you push through — and avoid the most common mistakes.

You have been making progress — the scales have been moving in the right direction — and then, suddenly, nothing. The weight stops coming off even though you have not changed anything. This is a weight loss plateau, and it happens to almost everyone. It is not a sign that something has gone wrong; it is a predictable biological response.

Why do plateaus happen?

As you lose weight, several things change simultaneously. A smaller body requires fewer calories to maintain itself, so the same diet that produced a deficit at your starting weight may no longer do so. The body also reduces its metabolic rate in response to calorie restriction — a process called adaptive thermogenesis. Hunger hormones increase and satiety hormones decrease, making it harder to maintain the same dietary habits. If muscle has been lost during weight loss, metabolic rate decreases further.

What should you not do?

The most common mistake is to dramatically cut calories further. This accelerates muscle loss, worsens adaptive thermogenesis, and makes the plateau harder to break. It also makes the programme harder to sustain.

What actually helps?

  • Reassess your calorie intake — as you lose weight, your calorie needs decrease. Recalculating your requirements based on your current weight is often enough to restart progress
  • Add or increase resistance training — building muscle increases metabolic rate and improves body composition
  • Review diet quality — are ultra-processed foods or liquid calories creeping back in?
  • Prioritise sleep and stress management — both affect the hormones that regulate weight
  • Be patient — plateaus often resolve on their own within two to four weeks
